Errol Spence Jr. is looking to establish himself as a top boxer in the crowded, talented welterweight division. A newly minted world titleholder, Spence (22-0, 19 KOs) has his sights set on a breakout year in 2018, and he’s getting things off to a solid start with a bout against seasoned veteran Lamont Peterson (35-3-1, 17 KOs) on Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Barclays Center has played host to several excellent fights over the past couple of years, and the crowds are often spirited and engaged. The primetime Showtime slot also holds plenty of prestige, a suitable platform for both the ambitious Spence and Peterson, a world champion in two weight classes in his career.
Spence las fought in May 2017 when he stopped Kell Brook to win his belt. Peterson’s layoff has been even longer. He was last in the ring back in February 2017 when defeated David Avanesyan via unanimous decision. Spence, a budding superstar is reportedly set to take home a $3.5 million purse for the fight. Exact details on Peterson’s share of the purse haven’t been revealed, but he didn’t seem to please with the numbers when asked about the discrepancy on Thursday.
Errol Spence has been highly regarded as a future world champion ever since his Olympic run in 2012. He steadily rose up the ranks against increasingly tough opposition, with his biggest win coming in his May fight with Kell Brook. That fight gave him the world title many saw as his destiny. It was an impressive win, stopping the tough Brook, and showing that he could go into a deeper fight and win (prior to that 11th round stoppage over Brook, Spence had never been past round 10, and had only been past round 6 three times). He’s now on the pound for pound list, and a showdown with Keith Thurman seems both inevitable, and awesome to consider.
